SpicyChat is oriented around character roleplay and a large, largely user-created character library rather than a curated in-house cast. That is a genuinely different proposition from the image-first platforms: variety is much higher, and so is variance in quality.
Platforms of this shape reward a bit of patience. The best characters on a community library are usually better-written than anything a curated catalogue produces, because someone cared about that specific character; the median is considerably worse.
Worth checking before you commit: how the free tier is limited, whether there are message or response-length caps, and how the service handles conversation memory. Those three determine the experience far more than the character you pick.
